Habits Decide a Laptop's Lifespan, Not Its Price
A Grade A unit treated carelessly can be worn out in two years, while the same machine can run well past five with simple care. Nothing here is complicated — all of it is doable yourself, and most of it only needs occasional attention.
The Battery
- Avoid running it flat repeatedly. Lithium batteries last longer kept between 20% and 80% than drained to empty and refilled over and over.
- Use the charge limiter if your machine has one. Many business laptops can stop charging at 80% — useful when the laptop spends most of its life plugged in.
- Keep it cool while charging. Charging while the air vents are blocked, on a bed for example, is the fastest way to ruin a battery.
Heat and Cleanliness
- Clear the vents regularly. Dust building up in the grilles forces the fan to work harder and pushes temperatures steadily upward.
- Work on a hard surface. A desk beats a bed or sofa that smothers the bottom vents.
- Consider repasting the cooler every two to three years, or sooner if temperatures creep up and the fan never settles down.
Storage and System
- Leave 15-20% of the SSD free. A nearly full SSD slows down and wears out faster.
- Keep the system and drivers updated, especially chipset and graphics drivers, which often improve power management.
- Trim the startup programs — this is the most common reason a perfectly capable laptop feels sluggish.
Handling and Data
- Lift it by the base, never by the screen. Picking a laptop up by a corner of the display is the most common cause of loose hinges.
- Use a padded bag and avoid stacking heavy items on top of it inside the bag.
- Back up regularly. Any component can fail without warning; what is irreplaceable is the data, not the device.
When to Take It to a Technician
Some signs should not wait: the laptop shutting itself down under load, a fan that grinds or stops spinning, a swollen battery lifting the chassis or trackpad, and a screen that flickers as the hinge moves. A swollen battery in particular needs immediate attention, and the machine should not be used in the meantime.
